Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying these drugs must be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the way of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," described one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
